Nervous System

The nervous system makes us who we are. Sensing our environment through sight, sound and touch, integrating complex information, understanding language, thinking, feeling, then making decisions and enabling us to act and interact with our environment and each other. It’s all orchestrated by the most complex organ ever - the human brain - and results in the most exquisite creation – our unique personality. Its function extends from the very simple and vital – subconsciously monitoring our status and adjusting breathing, heart rate and other internal processes, to forming our basic instincts and feelings, and complex ‘cognitive’ activities, like memory. When it malfunctions, it can be life threatening, but might also alter who we are beyond recognition or make it difficult for us to cope with modern life.

Nervous function can be divided into two broad areas – social/emotional and cognitive aspects.

Social and emotional functioning is highly dependent on our life experiences, the balance of certain brain chemicals or ‘neurotransmitters’, such as serotonin, dopamine, and GABA.GABA. and the quality of our nerve cells, all of which depend on good nutrition, especially B vitamins and essential fats. When working well, we can ‘engage’ appropriately with our environment - our mood is good, we’re motivated and sociable, we can respond to stress but also relax again, and we sleep well. When life throws a curve ball, or when we get into certain ‘negative’ habits, we may start feel overly stressed or tense, irritable, restless, irritable, restless, have poor sleep, motivation, or mood.

We also have a powerful information processing part of the brain – the cortex – responsible for a range of complex activities we take for granted - feeling, making sense, remembering, thinking, planning, speaking, listening, and engaging movement. These aspects may not develop optimally in children creating issue with learning and behaviour, and they may also deteriorate as we age, or during periods of stress and being overwhelmed. Circulation to the brain, nerve cell structure, nutrients to support nerves and neurotransmitters, such as essential fats and vitamin B12 are all vital to healthy cognitive function.
