Men's Health

Men’s health issues are on the rise, yet they aren’t talked about enough. Although less well recognised, men are at the mercy of their hormones too, especially fluctuations in the ‘male’ hormone, testosterone, which gives men their male characteristics and is important for energy, mood, reproduction, muscle building, brain function and more. After a surge of testosterone at puberty, stabilising during reproductive years, it starts to decline from around 30-40 years. Male hormone imbalance, especially low testosterone. can make you feel tired, unmotivated, unhappy, with low stamin and libido, and unable to build muscle, but it can also lead to compromised fertility and wider health problems, in particular heart and structural health.

Hormonal Challenges

Optimising male hormones has never been more difficult due to the modern environment. As well as low testosterone, men may get higher levels of the ‘female’ hormone oestrogen as xenoestrogens (chemicals that mimic oestrogen) which often come from the environment (plastics, unfiltered water, pesticides, skincare products etc.), or from overproduction in fat tissue if you’re overweight. High levels of stress, drinking alcohol, especially beer, having a high carbohydrate diet that lacks in nutrients can further exacerbate the problem and lead to a number of symptoms. Diet and other factors can also increase conversion of testosterone to the more potent DHT form that can cause issues with hair loss (male pattern baldness) and affect the prostate gland. So, how can we optimise men’s health to support daily activity, prevent future problems and help the body adapt to that natural hormone shift? How can vitamins, plant extracts and other nutrients in supplements help?

Establishing Balance

Hormone regulation is a complex process and has its own natural rhythm. Firstly, we need to provide the body with the right nourishment, with sufficient intake of good quality carbohydrates, proteins and fats which will include nutrients such as zinc for testosterone balance and fertility. Managing stress and reducing your processed food, carbohydrate and alcohol intake are also important, just as reducing environmental sources of xenoestrogen by eating organic foods, switching to natural skincare products, avoiding plastic, and supporting your body’s metabolic and detoxification processes. Certain plant extracts like panax ginseng can also support performance, energy and stamina. Depending on your specific health needs, you may also focus on areas such as heart health, energy and performance, or fertility for which you may need higher levels of specific nutrients or botanicals.
