It’s that time of the year again, when everyone around us comes down with colds, flu and other nasty infections. The festive celebrations are just around the corner, and we all want to make sure that our immune system is strong and efficient, so we can enjoy this cheerful season with our loved ones.
Antoine Béchamp, a French scientist from the 19th century, believed that diseases and infections were not caused by bugs themselves, but by our body’s inability to fight them. This concept helps us to understand better how we can avoid getting ill, and where our focus should be: strengthening our immune system and our natural ability to fight bugs.
Our immune system is a vital defence mechanism which can protect us from, and help us fight, infections caused by microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses. Throughout our day-to-day lives, we are constantly coming into contact with these contagious bugs. Whether these organisms infect, resulting in symptoms, and how long these symptoms last, can be dependent on how well our immune systems are functioning. During the winter especially, we become more aware of the prevalence of infections and can become concerned about catching these illnesses, not only due to the discomfort they bring, but also due to the disruption they can cause in our daily lives.
Here are the Nutrition Team’s favourite supplements so you can start building your natural pharmacy and support your family’s health throughout the winter months:
BioAcidophilus Forte is a practitioner favorite thanks to its therapeutic dose per one capsule a day, making it effective, easy, and convenient. It contains 30 billion of the clinically researched LAB4 blend of live bacteria. It is suitable alongside, or after, a course of antibiotics. Ideally, try to take it at least 2 hours away from antibiotics for optimum effectiveness.
Vitamin C Rosehip Complex - another great tasting and high dose powdered supplement that can be used daily, as a top up to your daily regime, or at times of stress and infection. It provides a 1000mg of vitamin C, as well as extra zinc and manganese for immunity and protection from harmful free radicals. The nutrients come in a base of rosehip and concentrated berry extracts, which provide a range of naturally-occurring micronutrients and phytochemicals. Perfect for daily use alongside a live bacteria supplement or one of our multinutrients.
Nutrisorb Liquid BioMulsion D is our best-selling vitamin D product, providing a high dose of easily absorbed vitamin D3 that tastes great and is easy and pleasant to take. One drop provides 1000iu of vitamin D3, which is required for the healthy functioning of the immune system, as well as healthy bones. The vitamin D is emulsified, making it highly absorbable and bioavailable, so particularly beneficial with those struggling with digestive or gallbladder issues. The drops have a pleasant lemony flavour; you can take them directly under the tongue or dilute them in water. Packaged in a small dropper bottle, it is very handy on the go or when travelling. If you have been recommended a specific dose by your doctor or complimentary health practitioner, it should be easy to adjust the dose accordingly. The bottle lasts for up to 6 months from opening at the recommended dose so it is very economical and can be shared with the whole family.
Immune Intensive is a great powder supplement that you can use for prevention when you are travelling or around people who are ill, or when you are feeling under the weather. It is specially formulated to help put you back on your feet as quickly as possible.
It comes in a convenient powder, which can easily be mixed with water or into a smoothie, providing a high dose of vitamin C to support the immune system and reduce tiredness and fatigue, as well as elderberry for its antioxidant properties, sage and beta glucans. It also provides good levels of vitamins A, D, and zinc to further support the function of your immune system.
Have you tried our Immune Boosting Smoothie recipe yet? It is a great tasting smoothie that includes our Immune Intensive alongside other nourishing ingredients: https://www.biocare.co.uk/news/emilys-immune-boosting-smoothie.html
If you have little ones, here are our favourite products from our children’s range:
Children’s Elderberry Complex – this is a perfect immune solution for all children, even the fussy ones, as it tastes greats and is highly effective! Elderberries have been traditionally used as a remedy for colds and flu, and contain a high amount of anthocyanins. The addition of vitamin C, and zinc perfectly compliment the elderberry for a stronger and more synergistic combination. Vitamin C and zinc are essential for our immune system, whilst elderberry provides antioxidants to protect cells from damage. Our Children’s Elderberry Complex tastes great as it is, but feel free to experiment with it and add it to a juice/smoothie, dairy-free yoghurt or even as a topping for delicious homemade pancakes. It is designed to be taken as and when needed, rather than every day, so it makes for a great kitchen cupboard essential. If your child suffers from recurrent infections, it may be worth considering a good multinutrients, such as our Children’s Complete Complex, alongside a good live bacteria product (see below).
Children’s Red Berry BioMelts - these convenient daily stick sachets are a great tasting ‘melt on the tongue’ powder supplement, containing 300iu of vitamin D3 for immune support. Our BioMelts also provide 3 billion of the clinically researched Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and Bifidobacterium lactis, two type of live bacteria which make this product a very comprehensive and effective daily support for your little ones. The powder tastes so good that even picky eaters will look forward to having it every morning!
Keep these supplements handy in your cabinet to get you and your family sorted for winter.
