What causes cognitive problems and memory loss?
If you often find yourself forgetful, losing concentration easily, and experiencing brain fog, this may be a sign of mild cognitive impairment, which may increase the risk of developing dementia (of which there are several types, including Alzheimer’s disease) in the future.
Our brain regulates many internal processes, such as heart rate, motor skills, and breathing. It plays a major part in memory and cognition. Neurotransmitters, the chemicals that help our nerve cells communicate, such as acetylcholine, glutamate and dopamine, are required for memory, stimulation, and motivation.
The brain relies on a good supply of nutrients, especially zinc, magnesium, vitamins B6, B12 and folate, omega-3 fats, and phospholipids, to maintain a good supply of energy, eliminate free radicals and toxins, and to produce neurotransmitters. Nutrient deficiencies, as well as blood sugar imbalance caused by high carbohydrate diet, sleep deprivation or excess environmental toxins (especially heavy metals such as aluminium from tap water and mercury from dental amalgams) can contribute to cognitive impairment and memory problems. Chronic stress also plays a major role in cognitive decline affecting brain regions involved in memory, and increasing inflammation, another risk factor for Alzheimer’s.
Our brain and nervous tissue are very sensitive and less efficient at repairing themselves than other areas of the body so early intervention and prevention are key. With the right nutritional and lifestyle changes, including optimising nutrient intake, supporting energy production and blood sugar balance, and reducing inflammation and toxic load, we can effectively support our brain health, promoting better memory and concentration.
